The m17 project

While surfing or more precisely looking for cc1200 code snippets, I found this interesting project. M17 is an open source hardware and software radio. So they directly offer driver for the cc1200 chip hat-fw. If you want you can build the radio based on the cc1200 chip using the CC1200 Shield.

Or the SX1255 RPi shield.

The SX1255 Shield

There are also commercially available radios such the CS7000. The so called linHT is also an upcoming open-HW M17 transceiver. This radio offers communication without base stations or internet! It is really radio to radio communications as in the old days. It supports data and voice transfer. The physical layer uses a 4FSK modulation schema a 4800 symbols/s. The preamble is 192 symbols large, the sync word is 2 symbols, payload is multiple of 2 symbols and end of transmission are again 192 symbols. The data link layer is composed of frames of 192 Bytes. It supports different modes such as streaming and packet mode. The third layer is the application layer where it specifies among other how to fill the frames for applications such as for audio call or text messaging. AES is also supporte. GNSS data can be also exchanged. You can find more details in the m17 specification document. This is actually one of the most reader friendly specification i read 📻
